The Lismore mother of four said she was concerned new State Government TAFE reforms, likely to result in cuts to staffing and services, could prevent people like her benefiting from the institution in future. “My TAFE teacher is the most wonderful, beautiful person in my life,” she said. “With these cuts you’re going to find a lot of people lose their jobs and they’re teachers who have done this for many years so they know what they’re doing.” The comments come amid claims by the NSW Teacher’s Federation that the government’s Smart and Skilled TAFE reforms will result in job cuts, campus closures, courses dropped and reduced skill development. NSW Teachers Federation TAFE organiser Kathy Nicholson outlined five North Coast TAFE reviews that she said would result in an overall “reduction of jobs and a reduction of salary”. “Members are ringing me constantly with fears, worries, distressed,” she said. Ms Nicholson said the TAFE Business to Business review was “cutting numerous jobs” and changing job titles to offer staff reduced-pay contracts. Although North Coast TAFE institute director Elizabeth McGregor confirmed they were “currently exploring staffing options in support and sales”, she said the changes would help to “maintain B2B ties, build relationships and win more of these contracts.” Ms Nicholson said the TAFE Now review was about “pushing students online” at the cost of skill development. But Ms McGregor said the development of TAFE Now was in response to a “growing demand for online, mobile and workplace delivery” and has resulted in the creation of jobs to manage the online system. The review of the horticulture section at Wollongbar is another area Ms Nicholson says the TAFE has “pulled out” of delivering services such as floristry and arborist due to funding.
